The Ice Nymph can be tied on hook sizes 6 to16, weighted or un-weighted and with or without a bead head. For getting flies down in fast water a brown weighted bead head size 6 works well to imitate large nymph patterns. A green or brown un-weighted size 16 on a dropper makes a good caddis emerger pattern.

1.      If using a bead head select the size for the fly. Select the color thread to match the ice dubbing, brown or green. For weighted flies use round lead free wire. Size .035 for hooks size 6-8, .025 for 10-12, and .015 for 14-16.

2.      If weighting fly cover 2/3 of shank with wire

3.      Rap thread over wire to end of shank and tie in woodchuck tail. Tail should be a hook gap past the bend.

4.      Dub abdomen increasing size for appropriate hook..

5.      Tie in prepared wing case sized for hook. Rule of thumb ½ to a hook gap in width.

6.      Select a partridge or woodcock feather for the legs. Stroke feather so fibers flair out to side of stem. Tie in tip of feather in front of wing case.

7.      Dub thorax.

8.      Bring the legs forward tying off at the head. Legs should extend out on either side of fly.

9.      Bring wing case forward tying over legs.

10.  Whip finish head.
