Pattern of the Month: Haddock Hauler

By Don McGinley

Hook: Saltwater Quality Size 5/0 (Nickel)
Swivel: 100 lb capable, purchased as single unit with the hook
Thread: Medium-Heavy Black thread
Body: Deep Purple Dyed Deer Hair (from a Big Buck)

The Haddock Hauler was originated by Capt Tim Tower of the Bunny Clark out of Perkins Cove, Ogunquit, ME. When attached 2' above a 16 oz diamond jig, this fly will outcatch all other lures and bait at a depth of 175-225'. This fly succeeded in delivering a 22 lb Cod (Maine State Trophy size for 2003), a 14 lb Haddock (Maine State Trophy size for 2003), a 12 lb Pollack and sundry other cod, pollack, haddock, cusk and wolf-fish on a recent trip out to Jeffrey's Ledge.

Tying this fly is easy:
1) Acquire a large (200 lb+) Buck and carefully remove Tail
2) Dye Tail a deep purple
3) Attach a good handful of trimmed Bucktail Hair to hook with Strong Black Thread (or light rope)
4) Epoxy head with a large dab of glue.

Attach to Fly line carefully. A typical 9 wgt rod is not appropriate. Try it on a 6'6" Penn #77 wgt" Rod with a Penn 113 Senator Special Reel. Use 50 Lb Leader.

Whoever said you can't catch fish "offshore" via Fly Fishing? Try the Bunny Clark next season and see how much fun it can be. If you don't have time to tie a few up, Capt Tim sells them aboard the Bunny Clark for $3.00 each.

Editor's note: No, this fly isn't an April Fool's Joke . . . or is it? In any case, this fly can be useful as an anchor, a boat-hook or a grappling hook. Don't leave home without it!
