Pattern of the Month: Purple Monster
By Bethany Poulin
Hook: #2 Heavy Atlantic salmon hook
Thread: Black or Purple 3/0
Weight: 20 Wraps of heavy unleaded wire
Tag: # Turns of medium oval sliver tinsel
Body: Medium purple chenille or spun rabbit fur
Rib: Five open spirals of medium silver tinsel
Wing: 1 ½” – 2” Purple Rabbit strip tied Zonker style
Inner Collar: 4 Wraps of long webby purple hen hackle or saddle
Outer Collar: 3 Wraps of Guinea fowl hackle

Wrap the hook with 20 to 30 turns of non-lead wire. Over
wrap it with thread and epoxy or lacquer it. Allow it to dry before tying in the
remaining materials.
Tie in the Oval tinsel above the barb of the hook and take
three wraps and secure it with a few wraps of thread
Tie in the rabbit strip just forward of the foremost tinsel
wrap leaving enough strip in front of the tag to reach the eye of the hook. Hold
the Strip upright and take three turns directly in front of the tie down to lock
the strip in place and then pull it back out of the way.
Bring the remaining tinsel in front of the strip then tie
in purple chenille. Wind the thread forward over the lead wraps and then wind
the chenille forward, leaving two eye widths space behind the eye to finish the
fly, and tie it off. (if you use rabbit fur dubbing dub directly to the tying
thread and bring it forward)
Spiral the remaining tinsel forward in five or so open wraps and tie it off
